Despacito is a song by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi, and Daddy Yankee became the song most streamed at the time in less than six months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music did not just draw interest back to the genre, but also to Latin music in general. In Billboard's Top 100 in 2015 had two songs mostly of Spanish and the year 2016 featured four. The Despacito song was at its peak popularity in 2017, however, 19 predominantly Spanish tracks made the Top 100, and in 2020 there were 41 such songs. Justin Bieber's bilingual remix Despacito was released in 2017. Soon after, pop stars began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) in addition to Madonna worked with Maluma for the release of Medellin. In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton performers were lamenting the genre's direction toward the mainstream. However, a younger generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro was determined to continue the evolution of reggaeton. He often used electronic dance as well as different forms.
